পৃথিবীর প্রায় সকল সভ্যতা, সমাজ আর প্রধান ধর্মগুলো হল প্যাট্রিয়ার্কাল (মানে পুরুষতান্ত্রিক)। 

In the Bible’s fi rst chapter, both man and woman are created in the image of God: 

God created the human in His image. He created it in the image of God; He created them male and female.

(Gen 1:27) In terms of equality of the sexes, one would think that that is pretty close to def i nitive. But then the Garden of Eden story comes two chapters later, in which God tells woman:

Your desire will be for your man, and he’ll dominate you.

Women can be prophets, but all fi fteen of the Bible’s books of prophecy are about male prophets.

Women can be Nazirites, a kind of voluntary clergy, but only males can be priests.1
